Step 2 Market Research…Help I am overwhelmed!

March 19th, 2008 · 12 Comments

Well, step 2 has come and …actually step 2 really never ends. That is why it is SO important that you go through this correctly. Market research is so critical to your success that it will make or break your site. That is why we teach you to do your research the way we are showing you. Once you go through this process completely, you will have learned the skill sets on how to approach any niche.

I know it is overwhelming and most people want to skip this step and get on to building their sites. But this is just too important to overlook and NOT spend the time to properly research your market.

You should of received the the excel spread sheets and are now working your way through your niches. Remember, when you begin step 2, do not be too picky on what niches you choose. Brainstorm up 7-10 and using the niche criteria sheet you will be able to whittle them down to 3 by the time you are done with step 2.

On the lighter side of marketing research (we all need some humor)..Check out this research video on how to properly clean your kitchen sponge.

Keep on track and dedicate X amount of hours to your research. As you go through this you will have amazing discoveries on what is going to work and what will not work. In Tuesdays webinar we had multiple people report findings through this process that either encoraged them to continue with the particular niche, or they came to the realization that the niche they were looking at was just not going to work.

But that information was PROVED to them on paper through effective marketing research and utilizing the tactics we are sharing in the 16 steps to success webinars.

So what is YOUR experiences so far? What are you finding out by going through this process and market research in this manner?

I was amazed at the lack of quality in the 10 ten competitors. Outside of government sites and Wikipedia, it appeared most of them got there from links and age. All the sites on the front pages have been around for at least 10 years.

I’m finding that the research … if I focus on 7 to 10 niches … will spawn 20 niches I would actively pursue … in I’m just using it to do maybe 2.

Researching about my current site … I’ve got lots and lots of outside support, and social proof of a need for what I have to say … it’s all real encouragin stuff …

The most trouble I have is with keyword research … I tried it and I’m a little slow to pick up on understanding how it works … but I know it’s because I’m trying to do a lot of other things to …

Any articles that make sense of keyword research … like a little primer … would help me a lot. D’ya have any in mind?

    Hey Sam,

I’m only into day 2 of my research. I’ve looked at a lot of sites and I can tell where I’m going wrong with my own site. I can also tell we’re they’re going wrong too ;-)

I also realized that I needed to tighten my niche some…it’s too broad right now.

This is great stuff we’re doing and I can’t wait to see the results…in let’s say six months down the road.

Actually, this has been exciting and a lot of fun for me…but I’m wondering when will I go back to normal sleep ;-)

    Thanks for your hard work!

I am stuck with what to do with the information on the keyword popularity and cpc excell spreadsheet. I listed several keywords (not sure if they are the best keywords) and I found the information requested - but I do not know how to analysis the information? Did I miss something that explains this?

  • 10 Sam // Mar 23, 2008 at 9:59 pm

    Hi Dorothy,

This sheet is used to determine a couple of things..

    1) Is there enough traffic in the market or niche you are looking in to sustain a large site? You want to have your top keywords add up to atleast 75,000 searches a month.

    2) Looking at the PPC will quickly tell you if there is money in the market.

So before you dive deep into market research, this sheet helps you find markets that are viable and sustainable.

I am still somewhat confused by the number of keyword views daily. Some marketers have told me that it is common practice to multiple the number in keywords by 5. So do you suggest that we concentrate on markets that have at least 2500 veiws per day or 500?
